En faisant revivre ces croyances désaccordées, Mona Ozouf retrouve des questions qui n'ont rien perdu de leur acuité. Pourquoi la France s'est-elle montrée aussi rétive à accepter une pluralité toujours ressentie comme une menace? Faut-il nécessairement opposer un républicanisme passionnément attaché à l'universel et des particularismes invariablement jugés rétrogrades?
